Landowner Property Issues Workshops
CCE Chenango’s Landowner Property Legal Issues Awareness and Long-term Planning program will offer two workshops in three different locations. Workshop one will cover legal issues and opportunities including leasing, liability, posting, and trespass. The leasing section will also review opportunities to make leasing a profitable enterprise for farm and rural landowners.
Workshop two will cover basic estate planning and transitions for farm and rural landowners as well as review the options for transfer including tax implications, planning, easements and land trusts. Each workshop will be held three times over a three county area; Broome, Chenango, and Otsego. These workshops are designed for farmers and rural landowners with emphasis on small-scale farmers, beginning farmers, agroforestry operations, woodland owners, and landowners exploring options for their properties.
There will be a $10 charge for the workshop, which will include light refreshments, materials, and handouts.
To register for the Chenango County workshops, call 607-334-5841. For the Broome County workshops, call 607-772-8953. Contact information for Otsego County will be available in subsequent editions. Registration will close by close of business two days prior to each scheduled event.

Speeding Stock Tanks
June 16, 201, 11 am - 2 pm
How fast can a stock tank go when equipped with wheels and a driver? Not very fast, unless you also have a team of racers to propel it along! What is a stock tank race? It’s the same idea as a bathtub race or an outhouse race, but with a bit more “country class”!
The Chenango County Dairy Day committee has been busy planning their second annual stock tank race on Saturday, June 16th at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich.
Form a team of 3 to 5 friends, take a livestock water trough, add a steering mechanism and wheels, and then decorate it. One person on the team needs to be the designated driver, and wear a helmet since stock tank racing can be dangerous. The other team members need to either push or pull the stock tank in the race, since no motors or motorized parts are allowed. Also, all the team members must be at least 14 years old to participate.
The stock tank race is just one of several fun activities being planned for the 12th annual “Celebration of Agriculture in Chenango County” being held on Saturday, June 16th from 11 am to 2:00 pm, with a parade down East Main Street in Norwich to kick off the activities at the fairgrounds. Educational exhibits, free dairy products, games and activities for the kids, animals, dancers and music will all add to the fun and excitement of this free, family activity! For more information or a registration form, contact Marge Davis at 315-837-4741.

"FARMSAFE FOR KIDZ" Annual Poster Contest
July 9, 2012
The George Fuller Memorial Fund through NYCAMH (The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health) is sponsoring the 23th Annual FARMSAFE FOR KIDZ Poster contest. The initial contest was held in 1990, a spin-off of the Iowa based Farm Safety 4 Just Kids program. Monies from a fund established by Mrs. George Fuller from Cohocton, NY, in memory of her husband who suffered a farm fatality, were used to provide ribbons and cash awards for the competition.
All 4-H members and area youth are eligible to participate if they live in Chenango, Delaware, Fulton, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego or Schoharie County. Poster entries can be taken to the Farmers' Museum Junior Livestock Show on Sunday, July 8th, 2012 or to the NYCAMH office in Fly Creek on or before Friday, July 6th, 2012.
This year, NYCAMH will focus on Power Take Off Safety as this is a hazard when operating a tractor on the farm.
Prizes will be awarded Monday, July 9th, 2012 at 6:00 pm in the Dairy Show tent during the Annual Farmers’ Museum Junior Livestock Show. All entries will receive a ribbon and a small gift. Poster Contest winners will be selected from three age groups - Ages 8 and under, Ages 9-12, and Ages 13 and older. Points will be awarded for safety message, originality and neatness. Posters must be 22" X 28" in size on 6 ply poster board. Please complete the entry form below and attach it to the back of the poster.
Winning posters will be awarded monetary prizes and ribbons. Winning poster entries will be displayed at the Farmers' Museum Harvest Festival in September 2012 and in the home school district of the winners during 2012 National Farm Safety and Health Week.
Prior to the poster prize presentations, staff from NYCAMH will lead the group in a Power Take Off discussion and activity.
For further information, please contact NYCAMH (The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health) at 1-800-343-7527 or your local 4-H Educator. NYCAMH promotes safe and healthy farming and is a program of Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY.
