Summary of Grant for Reducing Availability of Sugary Drinks in Community Organizations

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County was recently awarded NYS Healthy Heart funds to help reduce the availability of sugary drinks in community organizations. The additional funds were made available through an amendment to the existing Community Gardens Project grant, and funding will continue until March 31, 2012.

Jacky Knoll-Carr, MSHSA, was hired as educator for this grant and will set up the short term program for CCE.  Jacky has a Masters degree in Health Services Administration and New York State teaching certification in Health. She has worked as both a health educator and health care manager.  Also working on this program as Educators are  Autum Blood and Neisa Pantalia and Eat Smart NY Program Coordinator, Betty Clark.

The funds will allow outreach to approximately 25  businesses, organizations or schools about reducing the availability of sugary drinks. This includes demonstrations and a presentation about “Pouring on the Pounds”.

Ten organizations will also sign on as partners to work on wellness policies. These policy partners will receive considerable materials to provide healthy beverage options within their organization.
